For my capstone project, my goal is to create an app geared towards strengthening the user’s preferred language through reading stories. While growing up, I had many opportunities to be fluent in multiple different languages, but never got past the intermediate level. Unlike beginners, many intermediate learners are advanced enough to be aware of their own limitations. This hinders their confidence as this can slow down the learning process by making learners more hesitant to use the skills they do have. Believe it or not, but one of the main obstacles in learning a foreign language is your attitude. If you believe that a language is hard and that, even if you worked very hard, you might not succeed, then your brain will not try enough. My app aims to encourage intermediate language learners to keep learning the language without having to feel pressure to advance any further. Reading in a new language reinforces your language skills by exposing you to the nuances of your target language.
